admin writes, "Cruising Main StreetCruising Main Street and lower downtown Longmont has been a tradition of young people in our community and many other front range towns for years. The Longmont Police Department has proposed a new ban on cruising certain areas of Downtown Longmont (3rd Avenue to 9th on Kimbark and Coffman Streets) and all of Main Street with fines starting at $125 per ticket and increasing with follow up violations.

Citing a need to curb cruising associated activities, such as accidents, alcohol use, littering, grafetti, loitering, fights, and possible gang conflicts, the Police Department is trying yet another method to curb a long standing problem. They receive many complaints from citizens and business owners on a routine basis. Past methods the police have tried proved either temporary or ineffective. They were hopeful that if they stop the cruisers, then the associated problems will subside.
The Longmont City Council heard arguments recently and decided to not enact the Police proposal. Since all the problems are covered by existing laws, they are not convinced a new law will help. They did agree to discuss further options to aid our police force to curb this ongoing problem.
Our question to you:
Should Longmont:
1) Impose a Cruising Ban 2) Increase Patrols in effected areas or 3) Do Nothing-Existing Laws are a good enough deterent
