The Berlin Wall was built in 1961 between parts of East and West Germany and dividing the city of Berlin into East and West. The wall became a political symbol of the cold war between the United States and Soviet Bloc nations. The wall was finally torn down in 1989 leading to a once again unified Germany."

The United State Congress, both House and Senate have now passed legislation to construct a 700 mile long wall between the United States and Mexico. Incluced in the bill are other immigration initiatives including a mandate to the homeland security secretary to take all necessary actions to prevent unlawful entry into the United States. The wall will be constructed along the border from California to Texas. The project will undoubtedly cost hundreds of millions of dollars to the American taxpayer. Just how effective this wall will be in keeping out the flow of illegal immigration remains to be seen. What does seem clear is that the wall will become a political symbol with our southern neighbors causing more harm than good with the Mexican government, which opposes the wall.
What seems ironic to me is that President Bush's father was in office at the time when the Berlin Wall was dismantled. What legacy this wall will have remains unclear.
